They are designed for private use and small businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <strong>1st BImSchV<\/strong><em> (Ordinance on Small and Medium-Sized Combustion Plants<\/em>), all plants with a rated thermal input of less than 1000 kW are considered small combustion plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays, these mostly include oil heating systems, gas boilers and condensing boilers. <em>Pellet heating systems<\/em> and <em>wood chip heating systems<\/em> that run on <em>wood<\/em> are also gaining in popularity. However, burning wood can lead to harmful <em>air pollution<\/em> with <em>dioxins<\/em> and <em>particulate matter<\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dioxins &#8211; harmful to the environment and carcinogenic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dioxins<\/strong> are two groups of chemically similar, chlorinated organic compounds that belong to the oxygenated derivatives of halogenated hydrocarbons. <em>Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD\/PCDF)<\/em> are each assigned to one of these groups. Even in small quantities, <em>dioxins<\/em>and <em>furans<\/em> can cause <em>cancer<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.gsa-messgeraete.de\/en\/measuring-dioxins-with-gsa-measuring-devices-pm4-2\/\"><strong>Dioxins<\/strong><\/a> can be produced as<em>harmful by-products<\/em> in processes such as <em>waste incineration<\/em>, in the <em>metal industry<\/em> or through <em>private use of fireplaces<\/em> and can be released into the air. Natural processes such as <em>forest fires<\/em> and <em>volcanic eruptions<\/em> can also produce dioxins. The majority of these harmful substances come from human processes, in particular from <em>illegal<\/em> <em>waste incineration<\/em> in the garden or fireplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Small combustion plants &#8211; air pollution from fine dust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data from the <em>&#8220;National Emissions Inventory for Air Pollutants, Submission 2023<\/em>&#8220;, <em>particulate matter emissions from all small combustion plants<\/em> such as oil, gas, coal and wood amount to around 21.3 thousand tons. <em>Wood firing systems<\/em> such as <em>wood boilers<\/em> and <em>single-room firing systems<\/em> are particularly significant here<em>,<\/em> emitting around 19.4 thousand tons. The total emissions of particulate matter from small combustion plants exceed those from road traffic. <em>Wood combustion<\/em>, in particular, accounts for 97 percent of harmful particulate matter. Particularly dangerous are the respirable particles in fine dust, which can cause respiratory and lung problems and even cancer. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.gsa-messgeraete.de\/en\/measure-e-dust-fraction-at-the-workplace\/\">E-dust fraction<\/a><\/strong> comprises particles with such a small diameter that they can enter the respiratory tract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nitrogen oxide emissions from small combustion plants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, <em>emissions of nitrogen oxides<\/em> from small combustion plants accounted for around 75 thousand tons, or around 8% of total emissions in Germany (National Emissions Inventory for Air Pollutants, Submission 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carbon dioxide emissions from small combustion plants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At 114.0 million tons, <em>carbon dioxide emissions<\/em> from fossil fuels (heating oil, natural gas, coal) from small combustion plants were slightly lower in 2021 than in the previous year (National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, submission 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operation of small combustion plants in accordance with 1 BImSchV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>1st BImSchV (Ordinance on Small and Medium-Sized Combustion Plants)<\/strong> regulates the operation of combustion plants that are not subject to approval in accordance with \u00a7 4 BImSchG. This ordinance applies in particular to small combustion plants in <em>the domestic sector<\/em> and for <em>small businesses<\/em>. The aim is to further reduce emissions from small combustion plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In particular, the 1st BImSchV contains requirements for:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Permissible fuels for various systems such as boilers for wood and coal, wood-burning stoves, tiled stoves, stoves and open fires.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conditions for the installation and operation of gas, oil, coal or wood heating systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defined limit values for pollutant emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitoring frequency and scope for reasons of immission control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>List of fuels that may be burned in certain installations, including oil, gas, coal, briquettes, wood and straw<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>1st BImSchV<\/strong> is intended to help significantly <em>reduce<\/em> <em>dust emissions <\/em>from small wood-burning systems in order to protect people&#8217;s health. <em>Odour nuisance<\/em> is also to be <em>minimized<\/em>. In particular, the 1st BImSchV is intended to support municipalities and cities in complying with the legal <em>requirements for maximum particulate matter pollution <\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limit values for small and medium-sized combustion plants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limit values for individual firing systems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <em>stoves<\/em> that primarily heat the room in which they are located, i.e. for <em>single-room firing systems<\/em>, <em>limit values <\/em>apply for the <em>emission of carbon monoxide and dust <\/em>as well as a <em>minimum requirement <\/em>for the<em> <\/em>efficiency. Compliance with these values is verified in a type test before an appliance type is launched on the market.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limit values for boilers  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <em>smaller boilers, from four kilowatts<\/em> (kW), the <em>emission limit values<\/em> and their monitoring obligations depend on the year in which they were installed. If very high emissions are produced when operating old stoves and boilers, operators are obliged to <em>retrofit<\/em> these appliances or <em>shut<\/em> them <em>down<\/em> after certain transitional periods.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limit values for combustion plants built in 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific emission limits apply to combustion plants built from 2015 onwards. These can only be complied with using modern technologies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Measuring air pollutants with GSA measuring devices PM4-2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>GSA measuring device <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsa-messgeraete.de\/PM4-2-PM-4-2-sampler-gravikon-power-supply\">PM 4-2 <\/a><\/strong> (license IFA, St. Augustin) is suitable for measuring dust fractions such as <strong>A-dust<\/strong> (total dust) or the finer and particularly harmful<strong> E-dust<\/strong> (inhalable dust) in accordance with <strong>EN 481<\/strong>. The <strong>PM 4-2<\/strong> measuring devices can be used flexibly at various locations, including mobile workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also be operated <em>independently of the<\/em><em>mains <\/em>. A <em>high, adjustable air flow rate <\/em>of up to 4 m\u00b3\/h enables precise measurements. With the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsa-messgeraete.de\/PM4-2-PM-4-2-sampler-gravikon-power-supply\">PM 4-2<\/a><\/strong> can be used to detect <strong>polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and<\/strong> <strong> polychlorinated<\/strong> <strong>dibenzofurans<\/strong> <strong>(PCDD\/PCDF)<\/strong> in addition to sampling dust fractions such as A-dust and E-dust.
