{"id":10931,"date":"2020-08-26T12:09:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T10:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gsa-messgeraete.de\/measure-pollutants-in-the-house\/"},"modified":"2025-04-30T14:31:46","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T12:31:46","slug":"measure-pollutants-in-the-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gsa-messgeraete.de\/en\/measure-pollutants-in-the-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Measure pollutants in the house"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, the <strong>term<\/strong> <strong>pollutants<\/strong> refers to substances that have a <strong>harmful effect on health and\/or the environment<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>pollutants<\/strong> can be <strong>solids, gases\/fumes<\/strong> or <strong>liquids<\/strong> and are usually present as <strong>mixtures of substances<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>hazard potential<\/strong> depends on <strong>the type of substance and the duration<\/strong> and <strong>frequency of exposure<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Health hazards due to pollutants<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is <strong>not <\/strong>possible to make a <strong>general statement<\/strong> about the dangers of pollutants, as the <strong>hazard potential is very substance-specific<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some substances, such as <strong>asbestos<\/strong>, are <strong>carcinogenic<\/strong> and therefore very <strong>harmful to health<\/strong>. <strong>Other substances<\/strong> are only harmful after prolonged and\/or frequent exposure.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To give a rough overview, some <strong>pollutants<\/strong> are listed here as examples.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fibers, e.g. asbestos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dust fractions such as A-dust or E-dust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liquids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dusts<\/strong> are <strong>tiny solid particles<\/strong> that are present <strong>in the ambient air<\/strong> due to <strong>turbulence<\/strong>. This allows them to enter the <strong>respiratory tract<\/strong>. Depending on their size, they are able to penetrate into the <strong>alveoli<\/strong> (air sacs in the lungs) and there  <strong> <\/strong>cause serious damage. This is why this type of dust is also known as <strong>A-dust<\/strong>. With our <strong>measuring device <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsa-messgeraete.de\/SG10-2-SG10-2-sampler-battery-tube-guide-charger_1\">SG10-2A<\/a>, for example, <strong>A-dust<\/strong> can be measured and controlled precisely.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fibers<\/strong> are <strong>solid particles<\/strong> with <strong>a specific shape and diameter<\/strong>, such as asbestos, and can enter the lungs through the airways. This causes irritation and inflammation of the lung tissue, which can lead to permanent damage.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Liquids<\/strong> are substances that exist in a <strong>liquid state<\/strong>, depending on <strong>temperature and pressure<\/strong>. They are often <strong>solvents<\/strong>, such as <strong>acetone<\/strong>, which can cause irritation on contact with the skin as it dissolves the natural skin oil on the surface and destroys the body&#8217;s own skin protection. Compounds such as acids or alkalis cause chemical burns to the skin, which can also seriously damage the deeper layers of the skin.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Occurrence of pollutants<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pollutants are almost omnipresent. Contact with <strong>pollutants<\/strong> that can occur at the <strong>workplace<\/strong> is particularly regulated.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If pollutants are introduced or released here, employees must be protected. Various (legal) regulations serve this purpose. For example, the safety measures to be taken must be documented in the <strong>risk assessment <\/strong>and compliance must be checked regularly.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, so-called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>occupational limit values<\/strong><\/span>. This is the <strong>maximum concentration<\/strong> of a substance to which an employee may be exposed. This is calculated on the basis of an 8-hour day with a 5-day week. These values can be measured and checked with our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">measuring devices<\/span> (for A-dust the measuring device <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsa-messgeraete.de\/SG10-2-SG10-2-sampler-battery-tube-guide-charger_1\">SG10-2A<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pollutants detected &#8211; how high is the hazard potential?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If pollutants have been detected, the question remains as to what to do.
