The Greek term &#8220;nanos&#8221; means <em>dwarf<\/em> and illustrates the size dimension.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For comparison<\/strong>: a human hair is 80,000 nanometers wide.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>REACH Regulation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They can be produced using various methods<\/strong>, e.g. by <strong>laser impact<\/strong> or by <strong>comminution processes<\/strong>. <br>The possible applications of these particles are numerous and varied and have not yet been fully researched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The abbreviation <strong>REACH<\/strong> stands for <em><strong>Regulation <\/strong>concerning the Registration, <strong>Evaluation<\/strong>, <strong>Authorization<\/strong> and Restriction of <strong>CHemicals<\/strong><\/em> and is based on the assumption that those who <strong>put chemicals into circulation<\/strong> are also <strong>responsible <\/strong>for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly, the <strong>REACH regulation <\/strong>is one of the <strong>strictest chemical laws<\/strong>. It has been in force since 2007 and is intended to ensure a<strong> high level of protection for people and the environment<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Under the <strong>guiding principle of &#8220;<em>no data &#8211; no market&#8221; <\/em>, manufacturers and importers are forced to<\/strong> <strong>include<\/strong> <strong>safety information with their chemicals<\/strong>. Without this information, no such products may be placed on the market. A classic example of the implementation of this law is the <strong><em>safety data sheet<\/em><\/strong>which accompanies the chemical and contains information about the <strong>substance<\/strong> in question and its <strong>hazard potential<\/strong>, as well as listing the risk and safety phrases (as abbreviations) and the corresponding pictograms.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dangers of nanoparticles for health  <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The danger posed by nanoparticles cannot be described in general terms. Various factors are <strong>relevant to the decision<\/strong>: Are they <strong>free or bound particles<\/strong>? Are there <strong>substance-specific risks <\/strong>(carcinogenic or similar)? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Due to their <strong>very small size<\/strong>, these particles could get into the ambient air and enter <strong>the lungs<\/strong> through the <strong>airways<\/strong>. It is possible that they can penetrate into the alveoli (pulmonary alveoli) and cause irritation or inflammation. In many cases, the effects of long-term exposure are not yet known. In addition, it has not been conclusively clarified whether and how these particles are deposited in the body and <strong>what reactions they<\/strong> can <strong>trigger<\/strong>.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>State of the debate &#8211; concepts for inclusion in the REACH Regulation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nanotechnology<\/strong> is still at the beginning of its development. Nevertheless, it is already important to consider the extent to which safety concepts for handling nanoparticles need to be adapted. However, it is undisputed that <strong>protective measures<\/strong> must be taken <strong>for employees when handling nanoparticles<\/strong>.
