Term asbestos<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The term asbestos<\/strong> describes naturally occurring fibrous minerals with a diameter of between 0.1\u00b5m and 2\u00b5m<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The properties of asbestos<\/strong>, such as chemical and thermal resistance, led to its widespread use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to its low flammability and good thermal insulation, asbestos <\/strong>was also frequently used in private house construction. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typical uses include window putty or roof tiles<\/strong>. Houses built between 1960 and 1990<\/strong> are particularly likely to be contaminated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of asbestos in construction has been banned in Germany since 1993. <\/strong>Another indication of the use of asbestos is its appearance. It often has a grey-greenish color and fibrous structures can be seen if it is already damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the dangers of asbestos?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When inhaled<\/strong>, the fine fibers<\/strong> of asbestos can enter the lung tissue<\/strong> and cause severe irritation<\/strong>. The repeated irritation of the alveoli triggers inflammation and scarring of the tissue<\/strong>. Long-term exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to so-called asbestosis (“asbestosis lung”)<\/strong>.
