History
28.04. is the World Day for Safety and Health at the Workplace.
This day was established in 1984 by the International Labor Organization (ILO) with a focus on prevention. The aim is to show that most accidents at work are avoidable. The protection of employees is particularly emphasized on this day, as better prevention not only protects health, but also saves costs. Every year, this day has a different motto.
In 2018, for example, it was linked to the World Day against Child Labor (12 June) with the aim of strengthening the health and safety of young workers and reducing child labor. Young workers (between the ages of 15 and 24) make up a good 44% of the global workforce. Various factors play a role in occupational safety and the prevention of occupational accidents, such as lack of experience, limited awareness of occupational risks and the like.
Latest news
This year, the theme of World Day for Safety and Health at the Workplace is “A Safe and Healthy Future of Work”. The ILO is first taking a look back to highlight the positive development of occupational safety and health and to illustrate the importance of measures to strengthen occupational safety. Various aspects are important in the transformation of occupational health and safety, such as demographic change in the world of work, advancing digitalization and sustainability. These issues will be the subject of discussion at various events taking place as part of the day of action.
In English-speaking countries, this day (currently) seems to attract a little more attention than in Germany. Here, the Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV) (German Social Accident Insurance) and the employers’ liability insurance associations are the points of contact and leading institutions when it comes to occupational health and safety. They make recommendations on safety measures and advise employers. Here, too, the focus is on the prevention of accidents at work.
